Over the last two weeks, the Kinky Curly Theological Collective has been hosting our Talking Back series, giving a space for Black women to talk back against paradigms that have minimized or altogether ignored our witness as it pertains to our spirituality, sexuality, and the way we show up in society.

Last week, Dr. Pamela Ayo Yetunde (link to video), gave a powerful presentation on the need for us to talk back against transphobia in government, our religious institutions, and in society at large. As Dr. Yetunde expressed, harm against transgender/gender nonconforming folks happens because we don’t speak up and out against the harm.

Last night, I shared a short story that I have been working on for several months. The story, Forgetting Sodom (link to video), pushes back on the way that texts like Genesis 19 have been interpreted, seeming to justify the oppression of women, children, and queer folks. The story I shared offers a corrective to this harmful way of interpretation.

Black Women’s Acts of Refusal with Dr. Crystal Moten will take place on Tuesday, September 1 at 6.30 p.m.
